Critical care nurses are responsible for the most vulnerable patients. They have the responsibility to vigilantly monitor, assess and treat the critically ill, while providing support to their families. Whether you are a new critical care nurse, an experienced critical care nurse or a nurse interested in working in the Critical Care Unit (CCU), this program offers a flexible professional development opportunity by enabling you to access continued learning regardless of your location, work schedule or other commitments.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This program is designed for students with previous education. Please see the entrance requirements section of this page for more detail.

Designed for registered nurses (RNs), it consists of an introductory course to e-learning, five theoretical courses offered online, a critical care simulation component held at Durham College or a partner site and hands-on preceptored experience in a CCU.

if you are a novice or experienced critical care nurse or if you are interested in working in the critical care unit, this program offers flexible learning and certification.

The program begins with a brief course on the study methods required in an e-learning environment which is key to your success in the remaining five e-learning critical care courses.

A measurement of your knowledge and competency will occur throughout each e-learning course. Following successful completion of six online courses, you will complete the 39-hour simulation component of the program.

The Simulation course takes place at Durham College or one of its partner sites. This course provides an opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge to integrated case-based scenarios facilitated by an experienced inter-professional team of instructors.

PRACTICUM

The final component of the program is an integrated practicum, which includes 120 hours of clinical practice in an adult critical care practice environment. You will demonstrate competency in the Standards of Practice for Critical Care Nursing in Ontario under the direct preceptorship/mentorship of an experienced critical care nurse and the facilitation of a Durham College faculty advisor.

In our Culinary Management program you will master the art of food and flavour. You will explore locally grown food, experiment with ethnic and contemporary cuisine and develop your skills in the culinary arts, while learning valuable management skills that will take your career to the next level.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Culinary Management program is offered at the Whitby campus, home of the college’s new Centre for Food. This incredible new learning centre provides access to a full-service green-certified teaching restaurant; demonstration theatre; and state-of-the-art labs, classrooms and meeting spaces, all designed to offer you the best possible learning experience.

You will learn to provide accomplished culinary planning, preparation and presentation for a variety of food-service environments. With a strong emphasis on skill development, theory, service and managerial training, you will become equipped with the skills and industry knowledge required to succeed. This program will foster ongoing personal growth and learning in the areas of self-management, interpersonal skills, professional ability and industry awareness.

In addition, you will gain knowledge about the diverse needs of today’s diners and consumers and focus on locally grown and produced foods. Hands-on experience in culinary, pastry and restaurant demonstration labs and classrooms will help you to develop essential skills related to a la carte cuisine, pastry, desserts and baking, ethnic cuisine, contemporary cooking and more.

The Culinary Management program will foster ongoing personal growth and learning in the areas of self management, interpersonal skills, professional ability and industry awareness including:

• Applying cost control techniques to food-service operations
• Effective marketing to promote the successful operation of a hospitality business

The field-to-fork concept is based on the harvesting, storage, processing, packaging, sale and consumption of food – in particular the production of local food for local consumers. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

If you are a domestic or internationally educated student with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree, you may be eligible for a compressed, fast-track opportunity to complete your advanced diploma requirements in two semesters.

The Environmental Technology program focuses on the chemical and biological sciences as they relate to environmental pollution. An emphasis is placed on ground and surface water quality, soil and waste management and recycling in urban and industrial settings. You will also examine environmental regulations and review their social and economic impacts on communities.

Training and experience in the handling, analysis and monitoring of a wide variety of biological and chemical parameters linked to pollution are at the heart of the program. First-hand field and laboratory experience is emphasized in areas such as:

• Microbiology

Environmental problems and concerns are constantly changing and at Durham College we aim to adapt in order to stay at the leading edge of these changes. Statistics Canada has identified environmental technology as one of the top emerging employment sectors.

FIELD PLACEMENT

This program will give you additional knowledge in code requirements, propane fundamentals, system testing and troubleshooting so that you can challenge the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) for a license that will get you one step closer to your dream career.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This two-semester program focuses on specialized studies in the fields of natural gas and propane. The core curriculum is standardized and accredited by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), the industry’s regulatory body.

Through theoretical and practical workshop experience, you will receive training in:

• Applicable code requirements
• Natural gas and propane fundamentals
• Pipe and equipment installation practice
• System testing and troubleshooting of a variety of residential and light commercial appliances used for both heating and hot water

Durham College’s Corporate Training Services (CTS) administers the TSSA Gas/Oil Technician Certification exams at the Whitby campus for students.

The total price for each exam is $235 (TSSA fee $175, plus CTS administration fee of $60).

Please note:

• Although the passing standard for Durham College is 50 per cent, the passing grade on the theoretical examination and practical skills demonstration for TSSA is 75 per cent
• Failure to successfully complete the exam as noted above will result in a failing TSSA grade
• Payment for the above exams must be made at CTS, Whitby campus by the deadline date provided to you in class. Receipts must be presented at the time of examination and no exceptions will be allowed
• You should check with TSSA for details regarding certification

FIELD PLACEMENT OR CAPSTONE PROJECT

After successfully obtaining your Gas Technician 3 license through the TSSA, your learning experience will be complemented by a field placement that begins in October and runs one full day a week for the first and second semesters. This is an opportunity for you to receive actual field experience as well as build a relationship with potential employers.

To participate in the work placement portion of this program you must have a valid Gas Technician 3 license. If you do not have a valid Gas Technician 3 license, a capstone project will be assigned.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This program was developed with input from veterans in the digital entertainment industry and continues to garner enthusiastic support from studios and professional artists across the country. All of our professors come from that industry and are ready to share their knowledge and experience with you. The focus of this program is 2- and 3-D game prototyping.

You will explore environmental and level design, employing modelling, texturing, lighting techniques and real-time effects through 3-D gaming. You will develop sprite-based games using scripting and design through 2-D gaming. All of your work will be supported by a foundation in animating, concept art and pre-production.

You will gain a solid base in the skills needed to explore new technology and software with confidence including courses in:

Industry context is also strongly emphasized though a History of Games course. As a graduate, you will enter the industry with strong technical and creative ability, a realistic understanding of the world of games and a keen sense of professionalism.
