GAS TECHNICIAN 2
Want to get one step closer to an independent career in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration? Perhaps you want to be the one to call the shots on a job site? This program will give you additional knowledge in code requirements, propane fundamentals, system testing and troubleshooting so that you can challenge the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) for a license that will get you one step closer to your dream career.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This two-semester program focuses on specialized studies in the fields of natural gas and propane. The core curriculum is standardized and accredited by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), the industry’s regulatory body.
Through theoretical and practical workshop experience, you will receive training in:
- Applicable code requirements
- Natural gas and propane fundamentals
- Pipe and equipment installation practice
- System testing and troubleshooting of a variety of residential and light commercial appliances used for both heating and hot water
Durham College’s Corporate Training Services (CTS) administers the TSSA Gas/Oil Technician Certification exams at the Whitby campus for students.
The total price for each exam is $235 (TSSA fee $175, plus CTS administration fee of $60).
Please note:
- Although the passing standard for Durham College is 50 per cent, the passing grade on the theoretical examination and practical skills demonstration for TSSA is 75 per cent
- Failure to successfully complete the exam as noted above will result in a failing TSSA grade
- Payment for the above exams must be made at CTS, Whitby campus by the deadline date provided to you in class. Receipts must be presented at the time of examination and no exceptions will be allowed
- You should check with TSSA for details regarding certification

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma or Mature Student Status
- Grade 12 English (C or U)
- Grade 12 mathematics (C, M or U)
- Valid Oil Burner 3 license or proof of 75 per cent or higher on the Oil Burner 3 practical evaluation. You cannot challenge the TSSA Oil Burner 2 exam without a valid Oil Burner 3 license
- You cannot challenge the TSSA Gas Technician 2 exam without a valid Gas Technician 3 license
- Additional applicant requirements
PRE-PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS
- Valid Gas Technician 3 license or 75 per cent or higher on the TSSA challenge exam
- If you don’t have a valid Gas Technician 3 license you will not be able to participate in work placement

FIELD PLACEMENT OR CAPSTONE PROJECT
After successfully obtaining your Gas Technician 3 license through the TSSA, your learning experience will be complemented by a field placement that begins in October and runs one full day a week for the first and second semesters. This is an opportunity for you to receive actual field experience as well as build a relationship with potential employers.
To participate in the work placement portion of this program you must have a valid Gas Technician 3 license. If you do not have a valid Gas Technician 3 license, a capstone project will be assigned.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEGREE COMPLETION OR ADDITIONAL CREDENTIALS
Graduates may also be eligible to apply their academic credits toward further study through Durham College’s partnerships with many Canadian and international colleges and universities.

W. GARFIELD WESTON FOUNDATION AWARD
Students applying to this program may be eligible to apply for the W. Garfield Weston Foundation Award. Qualified recipients of the award will receive $5,000 per year, for up to two years, including $1,500 for tuition and $3,500 for other expenses such as travel, food, books, tools and supplies.
